I decided that I would rather be healthy and fit, than to be able
to eat anything I wanted. Fortunately, I had a lot of sports that
I enjoyed. I played basketball, flag football, racquetball,
softball, and enjoyed trying new sports.
I lost the weight, but more importantly, I learned why I had gained it,
and how to eat to keep it off. I became a student of nutrition and
fitness. I started running, and was hooked by competing in local
10Ks and marathons. I had bicycled everywhere as a kid, and found
that I enjoyed it just as much as an adult. I had been a lifeguard and
played a little water polo in college, so swimming became another
enjoyable way to burn calories.
When I saw my first
triathlon on TV, I knew I
had to do that.
I started my first nutrition
business to help pay for
racing expenses.
The other triathletes
called me Rx,
because I handed
out samples of
supplements from
my race bag.
An unexpected benefit from getting in shape was that I was able to get into the modeling business. In
essence, I was a professional athlete, since keeping in top physical condition was an essential part of
making a good living modeling. Being a triathlete was my "gimmick", which helped me to gain a reputation
with advertising clients.
After almost a decade in the modeling business, I decided to make a big leap and
convert my home-based business into a real store. Sports Nutrition Source was a
big hit, and I opened more stores, and eventually licensed the name to other people
and helped them open their own stores.
As my reputation grew in the
nutrition industry, I was asked
to appear on radio programs
about health and fitness.
At some point, the radio stations decided that I would
be a good host for my own show. My first program
was at KGBS, and then a couple of years at WBAP.
Over the years, I have been interviewed on TV, radio, and in magazines. I
have written hundreds of nutrition articles for fitness magazines, newsletters,
and websites. More importantly, I have spoken about nutritional supplements
to many groups. I have often had to defend the use of supplements against
criticism from dieticians and physicians who often don't really know about
supplements, much less use them.
My philosophy on nutrition comes from over twenty years of exercising, eating well, and supplementing
with vitamins and sports supplements. First, exercise is the most important of the three. Second, you can
perform much more efficiently if you eat better. Third, supplements can help only if you have already
done the first two. Read my article "Ten Tips For LIfetime Leanness" on the SNS website.
If you would like some help with your nutrition program, I have developed a system that can help you,
regardless of the diet plan you are on. It works with Atkins, South Beach, Zone, or any other diet
program. It's called the "Nutrition Hit List". E-mail me at mikeramsey@mikeramsey.net for more

I got really fat after college, sitting at a desk, with an expense
account. At twenty-four years of age, my blood pressure was
179 over 97. I was a ticking time bomb.
